HOMILY FOR MONDAY  THE TWENTY-SEVENTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME

GALATIANS 1:6-12; PSALM 111; LUKE 10:25-37

In our Gospel we have the story of the Good Samaritan which illustrates for us that everyone – including our enemies – is our neighbour and so we should reach out to them in their need no matter how inconvenient that might be. Pope Francis, preaching on this reading, said: “The priest and the Levite see but ignore; they look but they do not offer to help. Yet there is no true worship if it is not translated into service to neighbour. Let us never forget this: before the suffering of so many people exhausted by hunger, violence and injustice, we cannot remain spectators.” Love must go beyond words to actions. We must understand that the true Gospel of Christ is centered on love. Precisely because of this Paul in the first reading calls us to guard against heresies that are regarded as ‘the good news’.

Let us pray

Lord, as I make my way through the land give me eyes to see my marginalized and suffering brethren. Give me a heart that will love as you did. Give me hands that help as well as lips that pray.
