HOMILY FOR TUESDAY OF THE FOURTEENTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME 1 (6/7/2021)

GENESIS 32:23-33; PSALM 17; MATTHEW 9:32-38

The Pharisees said, ‘It is through the prince of devils that he casts out devils.’ Jesus was not distracted by this statement rather he remained steadfast and invited us all to be labourers in his vineyard.  Are we distracted with the present day mockeries and ridicules?  Are we true labourers or destroyers? Again, the first reading presents us with another lesson. It tells us that Jacob wrestled with God and that brought  a turning point in his life. His name was changed from Jacob to Israel.  This symbolizes his new identity. Anyone who encounters God bears a new name, a new identity and carries out a new mission.  Therefore, amidst today’s distractions; let us not forget our new name, identity and mission.

PRAYER

Lord, teach me, help me to learn. When I would snap at those who hurt me with their ridicule, those who misunderstand, or hinder me with some misguided helpfulness, those who intrude upon my privacy– then help me curb my tongue. May gentleness become my cloak. Amen.
