1 John 5:14-21/ Psalms 149:1-2, 3-4, 5-6/ John 3:22-30
“He must increase, but I must decrease.” Humility stems from understanding who God is and who we are. The Bible describes humility as meekness, lowliness, and absence of self. An Author says “Humility is not thinking less of one’s self, rather, thinking of oneself less often.” It is not low self-esteem but healthy self-esteem. John the Baptist submitted to the Lord’s Majesty despite his labour, power and fame. Similarly, Jesus was not ashamed to humble Himself as a servant even to the point of accepting death on the cross (Phil.2:8). Humility is being free from pride and arrogance. Let us strive to be humble. 1Peter 5:5 reminds us that “…God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” Humility is also demonstrated in our obedience to God’s will. In God’s will is our peace and ease. And so, the first reading tells us; if we ask anything according to God’s will, He hears and grants our requests (1John 5:14-15).
Let us pray
Lord Jesus Christ, you are meek and humble of heart. Grant us the same meekness and humility. Give us the right wisdom; deliver us from the desire of being loved and being praised by others. Help us to grow and excel without yielding to pride and arrogance. Amen.
