Harden Not Your Hearts
Jeremiah 7:23-28; Psalm 95; Luke 11:14-23
The biblical phrase “Harden not your hearts” serves as a timeless warning against stubbornness and resistance to change. It reminds us to remain open and receptive to God’s guidance, wisdom, and promptings, and to be willing to repent and transform our lives.
In Jeremiah 7:28, we hear the prophet describe a people who disobeyed God’s commands, saying, “This is the nation that did not listen to the voice of the Lord their God or accept correction.” They chose to follow their own sinful desires, rejecting God’s love.
Today’s psalm echoes this theme, urging us to listen to God’s voice and warning us against hardening our hearts (Psalm 95:7-8). The psalmist also reminds us that a broken and contrite heart is one that God will not reject.
As we journey through Lent, are we willing to listen to God’s voice of correction? Fasting, prayer, and charity are essential practices during Lent, but they must be accompanied by a willingness to obey God’s commands.
Jesus reminds us in the Gospel that “whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters” (Luke 11:23). To be with Jesus is to keep His word.
Let us pray:
Dear Lord, as we prepare to celebrate the Easter feast, we humbly implore your majesty to help us press forward eagerly towards a worthy celebration. May we remain open and receptive to your guidance and wisdom. Through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
