UNITED WE STAND, DIVIDED WE FALL
2 Samuel 5:1-7, 10; Psalm 89; Mark 3:22-30
“A kingdom divided against itself cannot stand” (Mark 3:24). This statement was the response of Jesus to those who called him Beelzebub. The Kingdom of God advances through unity of purpose and harmony of spirit. The Spirit is not given to promote ego, factions, or superiority, but to build up the Body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:7). Where division reigns, collapse is inevitable.
The first reading contrasts two kinds of leadership. Saul allowed jealousy, insecurity, and disobedience to fracture the kingdom entrusted to him. David, on the other hand, gathered the tribes, healed divisions, and strengthened the nation. Scripture says, “David grew stronger and stronger, for the Lord, the God of hosts, was with him” (2 Samuel 5:10). Growth follows unity. Strength flows where God’s people walk together. A divided Church is a failed mission.
Today the Church celebrates Saints Timothy and Titus, two spiritual sons of St. Paul. Paul charged Timothy to guard sound teaching and preserve unity in the community entrusted to him (1 Timothy 6:20). Titus was sent to organize, correct, and strengthen the Church in Crete, ensuring order where confusion threatened growth (Titus 1:5).
The Church is not built by competition but by cooperation. Silence envy and jealousy. Let us choose to build, not destroy; to heal, not divide; and to stand together so that God’s Kingdom may stand firm among us.
Prayer
Lord, unite our hearts and minds in your truth. Heal every spirit of division, jealousy, and rivalry among us, through Christ our Lord. Amen.
