HOMILY FOR MONDAY OF THE EIGHTEENTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME

FIX YOUR EYES ON CHRIST

Jeremiah 28:1-17; Psalm 119; Matthew 14:22-36

In Jeremiah 28 a false prophet was applauded while the true prophet was rejected. Hananiah preached what people wanted to hear, so he gained popularity. Jeremiah proclaimed God’s truth, he suffered opposition.

In the end, Hananiah died because he deceived God’s people. See, popularity is not proof of authenticity and applause is not evidence of truth. Many still prefer comforting lies to saving truth.

The Gospel gives us the remedy. Peter walked on water only while his eyes remained fixed on Jesus. The moment he looked away, fear replaced faith and he began to sink. The same happens to us. When we put our confidence in personalities, miracles, wealth, or our own strength, we sink. A genuine prophet never makes himself the destination; he always points people to Christ. If a preacher draws you to himself instead of to God, be careful.

Keep your eyes on Jesus, and no storm will drown your destiny. What has your attention will determine your direction. Fix your eyes on Jesus.

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, keep my eyes fixed on You alone. Deliver me from deception, strengthen my faith in every storm, and help me to follow Your truth above every human voice. Amen.
