HOMILY FOR WEDNESDAY THE TWENTY-FIFTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR II (Padre Pio)

The Apostolic Mission

Proverbs 30:5-9, Psalm 119, Luke 9:1-6

Today’s gospel (Luke 9:1-6) recalls Jesus’ commissioning of the Twelve Apostles, tasking them to preach, heal and deliver. This enduring mandate underscores the ongoing need for us to proclaim the truth, bring healing, and free souls from ignorance and sin. Today, are we authentic preachers, compassionate healers, and courageous liberators? Are we true witnesses?

Again, Jesus’ words to the Apostles remain timely: ‘Take nothing for the journey’ (Luke 9:3). This directive serves as a poignant reminder that materialism poses a significant obstacle to authentic apostolic ministry. Sadly it is for this reason, many ministers are compromising apostolic values today.

So, the first reading (Proverbs 30:5–9) cautions against both poverty and excessive wealth, recognising that either extreme can distract us from our faith. Riches can breed self-reliance and pride; while poverty can breed despiration. Proverb 30: 7-9 is a prayer for contentment. True Apostles should be contented in all things.

Today the Church celebrates a man who wore the wounds of Christ and carried the heart of Christ. An example of the Apostlic call. St. Padre Pio gave flesh to the principles of evangelical excellence: He was dedicated- five hours in prayer daily, lost in God. He was detached, poor in spirit, owning nothing. He was a deliverer, pulling souls from the grip of Satan, healing bodies and reconciling sinners through the confessional. He did not just preach Christ, he bled Christ. May his intercession trigger a fresh fire, a true revival in our apostolate.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, may we embody the apostolic spirit and give witness to Christ in all times and places. Amen.
