HOMILY FOR MONDAY THE FEAST OF THE CHAIR OF ST PETER, APOSTLE (22/2/2021)

1PETER 5:1-4; PSALM 23; MATTHEW 16:13-19

Today the Church celebrates the Feast of the Chair of St. Peter as the first bishop of Rome. He was formally called Simon; living and working in Capernaum as a fisherman when Jesus called him to be one of the Twelve Apostles. Jesus bestowed to Peter a special place among the Apostles. The gospel passage of today shows the appointment of Peter as leader of Christ’s Church following his great proclamation of faith in Christ. Maturity of faith is a necessity in choosing Church leaders. St. Peter also implores all elders in the first reading to be true shepherds to those entrusted to them. Thus, Spiritual leaders are further challenged to live exemplary lives and care for the flock of God placed under their care. Nevertheless, while spiritual leaders may try their best; the psalmist of today reminds us that we must not lose sight of the fact that the Lord is the true Shepherd.

Today the Catholic Diocese of Auchi marks the 18th anniversary of the Episcopal ordination of Most Revd (Dr.) Gabriel Dunia. A very big congratulation to you my Lord Bishop; may you continue to find strength of mind and body to work tirelessly until the Lord’s voice is heard. Amen.
