HOMILY FOR SATURDAY THE SECOND WEEK OF EASTER YEAR 1 (21/4/2023)

THE CHOOSING OF THE SEVEN

Acts 6:1-7; Psalm 33; John 6:16-21

“They picked out seven men full of the Holy Spirit”. These men were the first deacons in Christian history. They were ordained to serve – the theological reason for deacons today. These men were to handle the daily distribution of food so as to curb the ethnic dispute between the Hellenists and the Hebrews.

Beloved, in handling ethnic disputes we should not only be conscious of the constitution but predominantly we should be conscious of the pivotal place of the Divine. Choosing Spirit filled men was necessary because of the wisdom that comes from the Spirit.

Today, we are faced with the blows from undue ethnicity, tribalism, nationality and racism. We ask that the Holy Spirit may hover over our minds and heart so that we may gain transformation of heart, respect justice and right.

In the gospel, despite the fact that the wind was strong, and the sea was getting rough, they saw Jesus walking on the sea. By this act, Jesus was saying; “do not be afraid, I am on top the situation.”  Beloved, do you believe this? No matter what you are going through, no how rough and unjust your situation may be, Jesus is always with you. His name is Emmanuel, discover his presence and allow him to act. Just as the disciples got to their destination, you too will get to your destination.

LET US PRAY

Set aside, O Lord, the bond of sentence written for us by the law of sin, which in the Paschal Mystery you cancelled through the Resurrection of Christ your Son. Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
