1 Corinthians 1:17-25; Psalm 33; Matthew 25:1-13
**************
In the first reading, Paul says that the message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. Preaching about the Cross for many Christians is a waste of time. But for those who believe it is the actual means to secure time till eternity. The Gospel in line with this theme calls us to be ready at all times for eternal life for we do not know when the Lord will return.
Today the Church celebrates the memorial of St. Augustine. He was born at the town of Thagaste on November 13, 354. The story of his life until his conversion is a major lesson for many of us today. When he came into Christ, he lived the Christian life in truth. He had to cast off the cares of the world, he lived for God in fasting, prayers, and good works, meditating on the law of the Lord always. Eventually, he was made a priest and then a bishop. He spent the rest of his life teaching and refuting the writings of heretics. Augustine died, at the age of 76. His legacy continues to deeply shape the face of the Church to this day. Augustine is one of the reasons we must not give up on stubborn children. St. Augustine, pray for us.
Breathe in me O Holy Spirit, that my thoughts may all be holy.
Act in me O Holy Spirit, that my work, too, may be holy.
Draw my heart O Holy Spirit, that I love but what is holy.
Strengthen me O Holy Spirit, to defend all that is holy.
Guard me, then, O Holy Spirit, that I always may be holy. Amen.
