1PETER 5:1-4; PSALM 23; MATTHEW 16:13-19
Today the Church celebrates the Feast of the Chair of St. Peter also known as the Throne of Saint Peter. The “chair” symbolizes the authority of St Peter and his successors who have served the Church of Jesus Christ as the Bishop of Rome (the Pope). Peter was the first bishop of Rome; he lived and worked in Capernaum as a fisherman when Jesus called him to be one of the Twelve Apostles. Jesus bestowed to Peter a special place among the Apostles. The gospel passage of today shows that he was appointed as leader of Christ’s Church following his great proclamation of faith in Christ. Beloved, Maturity of faith is necessary in choosing Church leaders. St. Peter also implores all elders in the first reading to be true shepherds to those entrusted to them. Thus, Spiritual leaders are further challenged to live exemplary lives and care for the flock of God under their watch.
This celebration is not just about apostolic succession of the ordained minister but for the laity, it symbolizes an implicit assurance that the Church of Jesus has not change and that the truth and teaching of office of the Church are no compromised. It also reflect and reawakens the confidence of the oneness of truth and faith in any particular church. Should there be scandalous lapses the psalmist of today reminds us that we must not lose sight of the fact that the Lord is the true Shepherd. Therefore, while we continue to obey the authority of the Church we must not forget to look up to Jesus as the true Shepherd.
Today the Catholic Diocese of Auchi marks the 19th anniversary of the Episcopal Ordination of Most Revd (Dr.) Gabriel Dunia. ‘Uneasy lies the head that wears a crown’. So, our best wishes and prayers always!
LET US PRAY
