HOMILY FOR MONDAY THE TWENTHIETH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR 1

Christians and the World

Judges 2:11-19/PSALM 106/Matthew19:16-22

Christians ought to avoid being too enmeshed in the world. This was evident in the life of the Israelites. They neglected God and focused on the paganism of Ashtaroth and Baal. They were so in love with the world that they turned away from God and allied themselves with pagan deities.

John’s gospel reminds us that we are simply in the world—physically present—but not of it, not part of its values (John 17:14). We’re not supposed to partake in the evil practices that the world encourages, nor are we supposed to keep the dull, corrupt minds that the world breeds. Romans 12:2 adds “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind.” This requires constant effort and dedication.

The same theme runs through today’s gospel reading. The wealthy man who approached Jesus showed that he loved money, possessions, and wealth more than he loved God. He left unhappy after being encouraged to demonstrate kindness and selflessness.

The Christian vocation demands that we love God above all things. What do you struggle with? When asked to give, do you feel depressed? What are the pleasures, ties, and things you wouldn’t part with? We must surrender to God in order to obtain the ultimate treasure.

LET US PRAY

Father, give us the grace to value your love, kindness, and gifts above the pleasures of this world. By the power of the Holy Spirit, give us strength to overcome the trials of this new week and help us triumph over the dominion of darkness and ancestral forces through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
