HOMILY FOR MONDAY THE TWENTHY-SECOND WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR 1

The Rejection Syndrome

1 Thessalonians 4:13-18; Psalm 96; Luke 4:16-30

Jesus preached to his own people, but they rejected him. Rejection of prophets was a common phenomenon in the past. Today, we reject Jesus in our deeds. For example, while the mass is going on, some parishioners are conversing, napping, texting, surfing the internet, and using the social media.

There are those who reject an aspect of Jesus on account of a differing theological interpretations. Some individuals may reject certain interpretations of Jesus’s teachings or the nature of his divinity in favor of alternative theological viewpoints. Peter rejected the view of Jesus as the suffering Messiah (Matt 16:22).

The rejection of Jesus today can be deeply influenced by a multitude of factors, such as philosophical or existential beliefs, atheism or secularism, skepticism, science, and rationalism.

Moreso, people reject their ministers or pastors on account of ethical or moral concerns, differing beliefs or heresies, changes in beliefs or spirituality, disillusionment, spiritual exploration, lack of connection, unaccountability, and poor administrative skills.

Jesus was not blameworthy for his rejection. It behooves us, therefore, to do our best to ensure we are not the cause of our rejection today.

Finally, as believers, we must guard our hearts to see the working of God, even in familiar sources or persons. Ask yourself, “Am I inclined to accept the message of God or reject it?” Let us remain faithful to God, just as St. Paul says in the first reading, and then we will be taken up to heaven.

LET US PRAY

Father of mercy and love, as we begin a new week, fill us with love and grace to fulfill your mandates this week and always. Amen.
