HOMILY FOR THE FEAST OF SAINT JOHN, APOSTLE AND EVANGELIST

John the Apostle

1 John 1:1-4, Ps. 97:1-2, 5-6, 11-12, John 20:2-8

As we celebrate the feast of Saint John, Apostle and Evangelist, we are reminded of the enduring power of faithfulness, humility, loyalty, and trust in God’s sovereignty and goodness.

Saint John’s humility is evident in his actions, particularly when he waited for Peter to enter the tomb before him. Let us be humble and allow others to take the lead when necessary.

Saint John exemplifies true friendship and loyalty in his relationship with Jesus. Let us nurture our relationships with Jesus and stand by one another through thick and thin.

When Jesus called Saint John and his brother James, they immediately left their nets and followed Him. True believers must be willing to renounce the world’s promises and desires in order to follow Jesus and live according to His will.

Saint John’s presence at the cross, where he took care of Mary, Jesus’ mother, demonstrates the value of sacrificial love. The apostolic life is characterised by selfless service; if we are not selfless, we can’t help our world.

Let us pray:

O God, who through the blessed Apostle John has unlocked for us the secrets of your Word, grant, we pray, that we may grasp with proper understanding what he has so marvellously brought to our ears. Amen!
