Desire Needs Direction
2 Corinthians 4:7–15; Psalm 115; Matthew 5:27–32
In today’s Gospel, Jesus speaks bluntly about lust, adultery, and the seriousness of sin. He reveals something deeper, sin begins in the heart. It is not just what we do, but what we desire. Holiness is not about appearances or performance; it’s about the condition of our interior life. What you think, desire and dwell on shape you. Guide your desire, don’t let it stray.
Jesus says, “If your eye causes you to sin, tear it out.” This should not be taking literally but seriously. Jesus is using sharp language to make a sharp point: deal radically with anything that leads you away from love, truth, or purity. Guide your eyes, don’t let it stray.
Jesus wants to purify what we long for, so that our love reflects His own: faithful, sacrificial, whole. The real goal is not repression, it’s transformation. We are not virtuous because we repressed sin, we are because we are transformed.
St. Anthony whose memorial we celebrate today, taught that the heart must be rooted in Christ, not merely restrained but renewed by grace. True holiness is not in silencing desire, but in directing it toward divine love. Repression hides the struggle, transformation heals it. Direct your thoughts, don’t let it stray.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, purify our hearts. Heal our desires. Teach us to love as You love, with faithfulness, freedom, and truth. Amen.
