HOMILY FOR THURSDAY OF THE TWELFTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME

NOT EVERY ‘LORD, LORD’ WILL ENTER

Genesis 16:1–12, 15–16 | Psalm 105:1–5 | Matthew 7:21–29

Beloved, today Jesus confronts one of the most dangerous illusions in the Christian life: the illusion of spiritual performance without spiritual obedience. He declares, “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father.” This is not a call to louder worship—it is a call to deeper surrender. Faith is not a show; it is a foundation. A house built on sand may look impressive, but when life’s storm comes, only obedience stands.

In Genesis, we meet Sarai and Abram trying to help God fulfill His promise by bringing Hagar into the plan. But their human shortcut created chaos. Just like them, we often try to force God’s hand instead of following His will. We want God’s blessing but on our own terms. But faith that cuts corners will always bear bitter fruit. God doesn’t need your hustle or sweat, He needs your trust and obedience. Faith is not proven by how quickly we move but by how firmly we wait.

So the question is: Is your house built on rock or on religious noise? Are you obeying God, or just impressing others? Remember, spiritual noise doesn’t move heaven, obedience does. We must build our lives, ministries, and relationships on the solid rock of Christ’s teaching. Not everyone who prophesies is a prophet. Not every miracle is from God. But every heart that does His will is known by Him. So don’t just say “Lord, Lord”—live “Yes, Lord.”

LET US PRAY:

Lord, deliver us from empty religion and shallow noise. Give us hearts that hunger for Your will and feet that follow Your word. Build us on the rock of obedience, that we may stand strong when the storms come. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
