HOMILY FOR WEDNESDAY OF THE 13TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME

WHEN PIGS MATTER MORE THAN PEOPLE

GENESIS 21:5, 8-20 | PSALM 34 | MATTHEW 8:28-34

In today’s Gospel, the people begged Jesus to leave, not because He failed, but because He disrupted their profit. Imagine choosing pigs over people, demons over deliverance, business over salvation. That’s what they did, and sadly, that’s what many of us still do.

We cry for transformation, yet resist it when it threatens our comfort. We love our demons when they bring us dollars. We prefer our chains when they come with charms. But hear this: real change always demands real sacrifice. If you want revival, something must die—maybe your ego, your addiction, your shady deals, or your secret sin.

Even Abraham had to make a hard call, letting go of Hagar and Ishmael. Painful? Yes. But necessary for the promise. Some breakthroughs only come after a breaking point.

What is your pig? What are you still holding on to that’s stopping your deliverance?

And remember: the devil can’t possess a life filled with the Spirit—but he can influence the undecided, distract the lukewarm, and dominate the unrepentant. So take your stand! Resist the devil by submitting to God (James 4:7).

Choose people over profit. Choose holiness over hype. Choose freedom over familiar chains.

PRAYER

Lord, give us the courage to let go of anything that keeps us from You. Show us the pigs in our lives that must be drowned for our souls to be free. May we never value profit above people, or pleasure above purpose. Amen.
