HOMILY FOR THE MEMORIAL OF ST. MARTHA

Faith that Waits, Love that Believes

1 John 4:7–16; Psalm 33; John 11:19–27

Today we celebrate St. Martha, a woman of deep faith and active love. While grieving her brother Lazarus, she still trusted in Jesus. Her life reminds us that real love doesn’t run away from pain, it waits in hope, prays in faith, and trusts that Jesus will come through.

The first reading tells us that “God is love.” Martha embodied this by staying close to Jesus even in sorrow. We too must show love through patient intercession, especially for our departed loved ones. Though we might not raise the dead, we can help them find eternal life through our prayers.

In the Gospel, Martha boldly declares: “Yes, Lord, I believe.” This is one of the greatest confessions of faith in Scripture. She didn’t wait for a miracle to believe, she believed before the miracle came. That’s what true faith looks like: trust without proof, belief without a sign, confidence without evidence.

Martha teaches us to speak faith in the middle of pain. When everything feels lost, don’t give up, stand firm. Love actively, pray boldly, and speak faith like Martha. God still honours courageous believers.

 Prayer:

Lord, teach us to love like Martha, to believe like Martha, and to wait with hope until Your glory is revealed. Amen.
