HOMILY FOR SATURDAY – 17TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME (YEAR I)

Rash Promise

Leviticus 25:1, 8–17; Psalm 67; Matthew 14:1–12

Today’s Gospel recounts the tragic beheading of John the Baptist, a death triggered not by justice, but by a rash promise made by a drunken king. Herod’s careless oath, influenced by lust and pride, teaches us a timeless lesson: Never let pleasure or pressure dictate your promises.

Herodias’ daughter danced—not innocently, but seductively. Her performance, likely erotic and suggestive, stirred Herod to make a vow he couldn’t undo. Our generation must beware of seductive entertainments that lure us into sin, whether on stage, screen, or street. Lust blurs logic.

Herod drank. He looked. He promised. He killed. So we ask: Are we killing our values because of what we consume or entertain?

As we approach the celebration of the Jubilee Year of Hope 2025, the first reading reminds us that Jubilee is a sacred call to renewal, restoration, and return. In a world of failing thrones like Herod’s, God still reigns—He owns the land, the people, and the future. Hope begins when we come back to Him.

Let’s break free from the chains of impulsive decisions and live under the wisdom and rhythm of God’s divine timing.

 PRAYER

Lord, guide our words and actions. Free us from the tyranny of impulse and help us live in the freedom of Your will. Amen.
