HOMILY FOR FRIDAY THE EIGHTEENTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR 1

TRUE FOLLOWERS

Deuteronomy 4:32-40; Psalm 76; Matthew 16:24-28

Moses calls Israel to remember what God did—wonders, signs, and deliverance. But remembering isn’t enough. True followers don’t just recall God’s acts—they return to Him in obedience. Don’t just admire the miracles; align with the Master.

In the gospel, Jesus makes it clear: “Take up your cross and follow me.” A crossless Christianity is satanic! Peter tried it, and Jesus rebuked him sharply. Many want the crown without the cross. But you can’t follow Jesus while fleeing sacrifice.

St. Dominic once said, “Arm yourself with prayer rather than a sword.” He followed Christ with radical prayer, humility, and truth. He didn’t just preach; he bled the Gospel. Real followers burn with holy fire, not empty noise.

The road is hard, but the reward is eternal. What’s the point of gaining the world and losing your soul? Fans admire Jesus; true followers carry the cross, lose the world, and gain heaven. Be a follower, not a fan!

Prayer

Lord, may we never trade Your cross for comfort. Through the prayers of St. Dominic, give us faith that follows, obeys, and endures. Amen.
