HOMILY FOR WORLD MISSION SUNDAY 2025

Missionaries of Hope Among All Peoples

Jonah 3:10–4:11; Psalm 98; Ephesians 3:2–12; Luke 24:44–53

Mission is not about doing everything — it’s about doing the right thing with divine purpose. Many are busy for God but not fruitful in God. The mission field is not a stage for actors but a platform for witnesses. You are not called to perform religion, you are called to live the Gospel! Jesus, before ascending into heaven, said, “You are witnesses of these things.” (Luke 24:48) That’s the essence of mission, not activities, but authenticity; not fame, but faithfulness.

1. Mission Begins with Conversion, Not Activity: Jonah reminds us that mission starts from the heart. Before Jonah could convert Nineveh, God had to convert Jonah. Many preach repentance but resist personal change. Until the Gospel converts us, our mission will remain shallow. True mission flows from a converted heart. If your heart is far from God, your words will never reach others.

2. Mission Is Rooted in Grace, Not Human Effort: St. Paul in Ephesians 3 reveals that his mission was a “grace given”, not a personal achievement. Mission is a privilege, not a performance. God doesn’t call the qualified; He qualifies the called. That means, even your weakness can become a witness when surrendered to grace. The secret of mission is not strength, but surrender.

3: Mission Is the Face of God’s Mercy: Jonah got angry when God showed mercy to Nineveh — but mission is never about vengeance, it’s about mercy. We are sent not to condemn the world, but to offer hope. Every act of kindness, every word of comfort, every moment of forgiveness is a missionary act. The mission of hope begins where mercy is practiced.

4: Mission Is Empowered by the Spirit: In Luke 24, Jesus opened their minds to understand the Scriptures and promised the power of the Holy Spirit. Without the Spirit, mission becomes a struggle; with the Spirit, it becomes a fire. You cannot evangelize with empty lips and a cold heart. Let the Holy Spirit set you ablaze with passion for souls. You can’t give what you don’t have — stay filled, stay faithful, stay fiery!

5: Missionaries of Hope: Pope Francis reminds us that “every Christian is called to be a missionary of hope, carrying the light of Christ into the world’s darkest corners.” Our world is wounded by fear and indifference — but through prayer, compassion, and witness, we become living signs of God’s mercy and hope among all peoples.

The mission continues through you. You are God’s witness, not His actor. Do fewer things, but do them with purpose. Speak less about God, but live more like Him.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, make us  true missionary of hope. Fill us with your Spirit, convert our heart, and use our life as your message to the world. Amen.
