HOMILY FOR MONDAY THE THIRTY-FIRST WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR 1

Romans 11:29-36 • Psalm 27 • Luke 14:25-33

GENUINE GENEROSITY

If your giving needs applause, it isn’t generosity; it’s performance. If you only give to those who can pay you back, you’re not generous; you’re doing business. Real charity is not a transaction — it is a reflection of God’s heart.

In the Gospel (Luke 14:12-14), Jesus confronts the mindset of reward-based generosity. He tells us not to give only to those who can repay us. Real charity is not a social investment but a spiritual offering – giving without expectation.

St. Paul reinforces this in Romans 11:29 when he declares that “the gifts and call of God are irrevocable.” God does not give to us because we are useful or deserving, but because He is faithful.

Do we help people or only help our reputation? Do we give to impress or to bless? Heaven does not reward charity done for attention, God sees the motive, not the money.

Prayer:

Lord, purify our intentions. Teach us to love freely and give without calculation. Amen.
