HOMILY FOR WEDNESDAY THE THIRTY FOURTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR I

When God Weighs a Nation

Daniel 5:1-6, 13-14, 16-17, 23-28; Psalm – Daniel 3:62-67; Luke 21:12-19

Daniel 5 is not just ancient history, it is Nigeria’s mirror today. Belshazzar threw a party while his nation was collapsing… Is that not our reality; leaders feasting while citizens bleed?

He used sacred vessels for dirty entertainment…Just as many today use public office, sacred trust, church positions, and national resources for personal gain.

Then God wrote:

MENE – Your time is up.

TEKEL – You have been weighed and found wanting.

PERES – Your kingdom is divided.

Beloved, Nigeria is being weighed. Our justice system is weighed. Our leaders are weighed. Even we Christians; who mix holy things with corruption, compromise, tribalism, and hypocrisy are being weighed. We have been weighed in a balance and found wanting! We must repent and turn a new leave.

The handwriting is on the wall: A nation that mocks God cannot secure itself. A people that profane the sacred cannot prosper. A church that fears persecution more than sin has already lost its power.

But Daniel gives us hope; God still preserves those who stand firm in truth, even in a broken nation.

 Prayer

Lord, weigh us with mercy. Heal our land. Give Nigeria leaders and citizens who fear God. Make us Daniels in a Belshazzar generation, standing firm in truth and purity. Amen.
