THE LAMB OF GOD
1Jn. 2:29-3:7, Ps. 98, Jn. 1:29-34
Today’s Gospel reading presents us with a profound revelation of Jesus Christ as the “Lamb of God” (John 1:29, 36). This title, rich in biblical tradition, underscores Jesus’ role as the perfect and ultimate sacrifice for sin. Jesus is the lamb that replaces the Paschal Lamb, sacrificed at the first Passover (Mark 14:12), and supplants the daily sacrifices offered in the temple (Exod. 29:38-42).
As the letter to the Hebrews reminds us, “Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many” (Heb. 7:27). Animal sacrifices have ceased with Jesus Christ, and any attempt to return back to them is rebellious. Let us recognize the sufficiency of Christ’s sacrifice and abandon any reliance on contrary practices.
As Christians, our primary mission is to witness to the Gospel. We are called to be true witnesses, reflecting the values of decency, modesty, and integrity in our daily lives. May we heed the example of John the Baptist, who pointed the people to the Lamb of God.
Prayer
Holy Spirit help us bear witness to the perfect sacrifice of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Saviour. May the Lord bless us and keep us. Amen.
