HOMILY FOR THURSDAY: THE FIRST WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME

Carrying the Ark Without God

1 Samuel 4:1–11; PSALM 44; MARK 1:40-45

Israel went into battle carrying the Ark, confident of victory, yet they were defeated. They trusted a sacred symbol instead of obeying God. The Ark was present, but their hearts were far from Him, and noise replaced true faith.

This warns us today: religious practices without conversion are empty. We may attend Mass, carry Bibles, or wear sacramentals, yet live unchanged lives. God cannot be used or manipulated; holiness is necessary for spiritual power.

Listen, you can carry holy things and still be spiritually empty. When obedience is absent, the Ark becomes just furniture. God’s presence is not activated by symbols but by surrender. Sacred symbols cannot replace a converted heart. Sacramentals cannot replace sacraments. Wear the rosary but seek baptism.

 Prayer
Lord, cleanse us of empty worship. Give us obedient hearts and authentic faith, so Your presence may truly remain with us. Amen.
