HOMILY FOR THURSDAY THE THIRD WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME, YEAR II

LET YOUR LIGHT BE SEEN

 2 Samuel 7:18-19, 24-29; Psalm 132; Mark 4:21-25.

Today’s gospel presents us with a simple question: “Is a lamp brought in to be put under a bed or under a basket?” (Mark 4:21). Light is meant to shine. At Baptism, the light of Christ was placed in our hands, not to be hidden, but to be lived. A Christian who hides the light has forgotten the purpose of the flame.

Light needs energy to keep burning. That energy is a life of prayer and a clear conscience. When prayer weakens, the light grows dim; when conscience is ignored, the light flickers. This is why David in the first reading goes before the Lord in humility and praise, acknowledging that everything he has comes from God (2 Samuel 7:18–19). The secret place with God is where the flame is refueled. Without prayer, we may still look like lamps, but we no longer give light.

Jesus also warns us: “The measure you give will be the measure you get” (Mark 4:24). If we give the world courage, goodness, and truth, light will multiply. Light attracts; darkness repels. Let your words, choices, and conduct proclaim Christ.

Prayer

Father, we thank You for the light of Christ given to us. Renew our hearts through prayer and integrity, so that our light may shine. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
