HOMILY FOR WEDNESDAY OF THE FOURTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR II

David’s Census

2 Samuel 24:2, 8–17; Psalm 31; Mark 6:1–6

David orders a census, not for worship, not for gratitude, but for control and pride. He wants numbers to reassure him, statistics to secure him, and strength he can measure. God is displeased because the census exposes David’s heart: he trusted soldiers more than God.  The result was destruction, reminding us that whatever we rely on apart from God will eventually fail us. The census was not a sin of mathematics, but a sin of misplaced trust.

In the Gospel, Jesus returns to His hometown, where familiarity breeds unbelief. They knew His background but not His mystery. They reduced Him to history and missed His divinity. Scripture says, “He could work no miracle there because of their lack of faith.” Not because He lacked power, but because unbelief blocked it. Nazareth counted credentials instead of faith, just as David counted his army instead of counting on God.

Prayer

Lord, forgive us for trusting numbers, positions, and familiarity more than You. Deliver us from pride and unbelief. Teach us to place our lives entirely in Your hands. Amen.
