HOMILY FOR FRIDAY: THE NINTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME

DON’T DOWNSIZE JESUS

2 Timothy 3:10-17; Psalm 119; Mark 12:35-37

Many people do not reject Jesus; they simply reduce Him. They see Him as a miracle worker, a problem solver, they turn Him into a motivational speaker, a life coach, a miracle dispenser, or a spiritual emergency contact. They want Jesus to bless their plans, but not direct their lives. They want Him as Saviour but not as Lord of the lives.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus challenges the crowd’s understanding of the Messiah. They saw Him merely as the Son of David, but Jesus reveals that He is also David’s Lord. In other words, Jesus is far greater than we often imagine.

We downsize Jesus whenever we listen to His promises but ignore His commands, seek His blessings but resist His authority. In the first reading, St. Paul reminds Timothy that all Scripture is inspired by God. We cannot claim to follow Christ while ignoring His Word. The Bible is God’s voice for our conversion. Let’s reevaluate our understanding of the Messiah.

The witness of St. Boniface reminds us that Christ is worth everything. He did not merely admire Jesus; he lived and died for Him. The question for us today is simple: Is Jesus just part of my life, or is He truly Lord of my life? The answer will determine not only how we worship, but how we live.

Prayer

Lord, give us the grace not only to hear Your Word with delight but to follow it with courage. Amen.
