THE SEVEN SORROWS OF MARY

1. The Prophecy of Simeon (Luke 2:25–35): When Mary and Joseph presented the infant Jesus in the temple, Simeon prophesied that Jesus would be a sign of contradiction, and that a sword would pierce Mary’s soul.

We are reminded that following Christ comes with suffering. Like Mary, we must accept God’s will even when it pierces our hearts.

2. The Flight into Egypt (Matthew 2:13–15)

Mary fled with Joseph and baby Jesus to Egypt to escape Herod’s attempt to kill the child. We are called to trust God in times of fear and uncertainty. Like Mary, we must protect the life of Christ within us amid a hostile world.

3. The Loss of the Child Jesus in the Temple (Luke 2:41–50) Mary and Joseph lost the 12-year-old Jesus for three days, only to find Him in the temple teaching.

There are times we feel distant from God. Like Mary, we must seek Him diligently until we find Him again.

4. Mary Meets Jesus on the Way to Calvary (Luke 23:27–31)

Mary encountered Jesus carrying His cross to Golgotha. She shared deeply in His pain but could not ease it.

We meet loved ones in their suffering and feel helpless. Like Mary, we can offer silent presence, love, and intercession.

5. The Crucifixion and Death of Jesus (John 19:25–30)

Mary stood at the foot of the Cross as her Son died. She suffered with Him, giving her full yes to God. We are called to stand firm in faith even in the darkest moments. Like Mary, we must remain close to Jesus until the end.

6. The Body of Jesus is Taken Down from the Cross (Luke 23:50–54) Mary received the lifeless body of her Son, holding Him in sorrow and love. We are reminded of the cost of sin and the beauty of compassion. Like Mary, we must receive suffering with dignity.

7. The Burial of Jesus (Luke 23:55–56)

Mary watched as Jesus was laid in the tomb, her heart filled with grief and faith. Even when everything seems over, we must believe in God’s promise of resurrection.

Closing Prayer

Mary, Mother of Sorrows, teach me to walk with you in suffering and to never lose faith in the promise of resurrection. Amen.
