HOMILY –WEDNESDAY, 31ST WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME (YEAR I)

 Debt of Love

Romans 13:8–10; Psalm 111:1-2,4-5,9; Luke 14:25–33

St. Paul says: “Owe no one anything, except to love one another.” In a world drowning in financial debt, emotional debt, and spiritual debt, Paul says there is ONE DEBT God wants you to keep paying without ever finishing: LOVE. Love that costs, bleeds, in fact, a cross-shaped love.

You can pray like a saint, preach like an apostle, fast like a monk, but if you don’t love, you are a lawbreaker in disguise. Paul isn’t asking you to memorize commandments, he’s asking you to become the kind of person who naturally fulfills them. Real holiness is not loud devotion but silent compassion and ardent Christ lover.

Jesus seals this in Luke 14:25–33: “Whoever does not carry his cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.” You cannot be a disciple without the cross, and you cannot carry the cross without love. The cross is not just pain; it is the price of loving beyond convenience. If your Christianity doesn’t cost you something, it’s probably not Christianity.

PRAYER

Lord, give us the courage to love even when it hurts, to forgive even when it feels unfair, and to carry the cross with joy, knowing love never fails. Amen.
