HOMILY FOR SATURDAY THE FOURTEENTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR 1

When Hatred Backfires

GENESIS 49:29-33, 50:15-26; PSALM 105; MATTHEW 10:24-38

Joseph’s story is proof that no attack, no envy, and no betrayal can stop God’s plan. His brothers hated him, plotted against him, and sold him out, but Joseph declared, “God turned the evil you meant against me for good” (Gen 50:20). What a turnaround! Beloved, don’t panic when people push you down God may be positioning you for a lift-up. Your pain can become the very passage to your promotion. Remember Romans 8:28 “All things work together for good…” Even if envy drives you into a pit, grace will carry you to the palace!

Beloved, evil never has the final word. Theologically, Joseph narrative reflects the mystery of God’s permissive will: He does not author evil, but He permits it and transforms it for His redemptive purpose (cf. Catechism of the Catholic Church, §312). This truth echoes in the Cross itself, human betrayal and violence became the means of salvation. Just as God used Joseph to preserve nations, so He uses our wounds to birth witness.

In the Gospel, Jesus says: “Do not be afraid…” because persecution is part of the package for true disciples. If they insulted Jesus, expect some heat too. But don’t back down! Fear is the enemy’s favorite tactic, but faith is our shield. Keep preaching, keep standing, keep shining. God will uncover every lie and honor every act of faith. So hold your peace, walk in love, and trust the God who vindicates. Just like Joseph, your enemies may push, but they can’t prevail—your story is heading for glory.

Let Us Pray:

Lord, when envy rises and trials come, give us courage to stand. Turn every evil plan for our harm into miracles for our good. Like Joseph, may we come out stronger, wiser, and closer to You. Through Jesus Christ, our Lord, Amen.
