HOMILY FOR FRIDAY THE FOURTEENTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR 1 (Memorial of St. Benedict, Abbot)

Jacob and Joseph’s reunion

Genesis 46:1–7, 28–30 | Psalm 37 | Matthew 10:16–23

Jacob thought Joseph was dead, but what seemed lost was actually preserved by God. When father and son reunited in Egypt, it wasn’t just a family moment, it was a divine fulfillment.  That’s what heaven looks like when a soul returns home through repentance and reconciliation. No matter your distance, God is still sending the “carts” of mercy to carry you home!

Again, some parents have waited for years, aching for their lost or distant children; held back by struggle, silence, or suffering. Jacob and Joseph’s reunion reminds us that no distance is too great, no situation too lost for God to restore. What was thought dead can live again. Hold on—your reunion is still possible.

In the Gospel, Jesus speaks plainly, there will be persecution, betrayal, and hatred. But He also promises presence, strength, and eternal reward. The road to reunion may be rough, but the destination is glorious. Stay faithful. Your scars are not signs of failure, they are proof of your faithfulness.

Today we honour St. Benedict, the Father of Western Monasticism. He emphasizes community, reconciliation, and unity— key elements of reunion. His Rule balanced prayer, work, and spiritual discipline. Are we balanced?

PRAYER:

Lord, give us the joy of reunion, the strength to endure, and the spirit of St. Benedict—to labour in love, pray with discipline, and finish our mission in peace. Amen.
