HOMILY FOR THURSDAY OF THE TWENTY-THIRD WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME (YEAR I)

“Love your enemies!”

Colossians 3:12-17; Psalm 150; Luke 6:27-38

This is the most difficult command of Jesus, yet the clearest mark of a true Christian. Many cannot love their friends, yet Christ dares us to love our enemies. Shocking! Radical! Uncomfortable! But this is Christianity.

Jesus Himself prayed for His killers: “Father, forgive them…” (Luke 23:34). If you cannot forgive, if you cannot bless those who curse you, if you cannot pray for your haters, then your Christianity is still shallow. The Gospel is not for cowards; it is for warriors of love who conquer hatred with forgiveness.

True strength is not retaliation but restraint; not vengeance but victory of love. The world says “pay them back,” but Christ says “clothe yourselves in love” (Col. 3:14). This is not weakness—it is divine power in action.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, teach us to love like You, to forgive when it hurts,  clothe us with mercy, patience, and love, that we may overcome hatred with Your peace. Amen.
