Joy in Serving the Lord
Baruch 4:5–12, 27–29 / Psalm 119 / Luke 10:17–24
In today’s Gospel, the disciples return from mission, rejoicing that even demons submitted to them in Christ’s name. Their joy was not in personal power but in sharing in the authority of Christ. True fulfillment comes when we give ourselves to God’s work, mission births joy, obedience brings victory, and faithfulness is always rewarded.
The first reading reminds us not to despair in exile or hardship, for God does not abandon His people. Hope is the heartbeat of faith: no matter our struggles, those who remain faithful will see restoration.
Today, the Church celebrates St. Francis of Assisi, a man who abandoned wealth and comfort to live in radical poverty and perfect joy. He discovered that to lose everything for Christ is to gain everything in Christ. Francis teaches us that the joy of the Gospel surpasses the riches of the world.
So, where do you find your joy—in possessions, in pride, or in Christ? The disciples and St. Francis point us to the answer: lasting joy is found only in God.
PRAYER
Father, help us to seek joy in You alone. Through the intercession of St. Francis of Assisi, make us faithful, hopeful, and fearless in serving You. Amen.
