Gathering vs scattering
(Joel 1:13–15; 2:1–2 | Psalm 111 | Luke 11:15–26)
In the first reading, the prophet Joel announces the “day of the Lord” — a day of darkness and judgment for those who have strayed from God. He calls the priests to lament and the people to repent. This is a timely reminder that spiritual negligence leads to disaster. The call to repentance in Joel prepares us to stand with Christ rather than against Him.
In the Gospel, Jesus declares, “Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.” To be with Jesus is not a mere feeling; it is a commitment. It begins at baptism, deepens through the Eucharist, and is renewed in confession. Sin scatters; holiness gathers. Division, envy, and deceit separate us from God, but love, unity, and peace keep us rooted in His Kingdom.
Pope Francis notes three lessons from this Gospel: (1) Jesus truly battles the devil — don’t distort the truth; (2) there’s no middle ground — neutrality is rejection; (3) be watchful — the devil is cunning and persistent.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, save us from the darkness of sin. Keep us steadfast in faith and united in your truth, that we may stand with you always. Amen.
