HOMILY FOR WEDNESDAY OF THE FOURTH WEEK OF LENT

God is working

Isaiah 49:8-15, Psalm 145, John 5:17-30

Jesus declares, “My Father is working until now, and I am working” (John 5:17). This assures us that God is never absent nor idle in our lives. Even when we feel forgotten or abandoned, the Lord is still at work. For He says, “In a time of favour I have answered you… I will not forget you. Behold, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands” (Isaiah 49:8, 15–16). Therefore, God is with us even in our struggles; let not your heart grow weary, and do not give up, for the Lord is working. If God is working, we too should be active and deligent.

Again, Jesus reveals that He shares fully in the power of the Father. It means that whoever encounters Jesus encounters the fullness of God’s power. Hence, He says, “The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live” (John 5:25). This speaks not only of physical resurrection, but also of the revival of dead hopes, broken dreams, and weakened faith. God’s power is made manifest in revival.

Lastly, the readings today reminds us that hearing leads to living. The Lord says, “…Those who hear will live.” Not those who merely admire, nor those who argue, but those who hear, understand and respond. To hear Christ is to trust, obey and to believe Him. For faith is not only listening; it is responding. Therefore, let us hear His voice, believe His word, and we shall live.

Prayer

O God, who rewards the just and offers pardon to sinners, have mercy on us. May we not fail in our personal responsibilities. Give us grace to work deligently for the salvation of souls. Amen
