HOMILY: SATURDAY OF THE FOURTH WEEK OF LENT

Fair Hearing

Jeremiah 11:18-20, Psalm 7, John 7:40-53

“The law does not allow us to pass judgment on a man without hearing him” (John 7:51). This statement highlights the Pharisees’ mistake in rejecting Jesus without a fair investigation. Today, many people face hatred and rejection due to unsubstantiated notions.

Jesus’ contemporaries were puzzled about his identity, and this uncertainty persists. It leads to criticism and the spread of negative rumors, often fueled by jealousy, envy, or hatred. Jeremiah captured the intent of such individuals: “Let us cut him off from the land of the living, so that his name may be quickly forgotten” (Jeremiah 11:19).

Give people a fair hearing before judging them. Avoid condemning others without hearing their side. Recognize that unfair judgment can lead to harm and suffering.

Prayer

May your mercy guide our hearts, O Lord. Without your grace, we cannot find favor in your sight. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, forever and ever. Amen.
