FULFILLING THE LAW OR REWRITING IT?
1 Kings 18:20–39; Psalm 16; Matthew 5:17–19
Jesus declares, “I have not come to abolish the Law and the Prophets but to fulfil them” (Matthew 5:17). Yet many Christians today want a Christ without commandments and a Gospel without demands. We celebrate Jesus as Saviour but resist Him as Lord. Instead of conforming our lives to God’s law, we often try to reshape God’s law to fit our lifestyles. But Jesus warns, “If you love me, keep my commandments” (John 14:15).
The challenge is clear: if Jesus did not abolish the law, why are we so eager to do so? In matters of life, sexuality, marriage, honesty, and discipleship, many choose personal preference over divine truth or law. The consequence is a society losing its moral compass because it has first lost its reverence for God. As St. Paul cautions, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind” (Romans 12:2).
In the first reading, Elijah confronts Israel: “If the Lord is God, follow Him; but if Baal, then follow him” (1 Kings 18:21). God is still asking us the same question. Stop limping between faith and compromise. Choose Christ completely, for “a double-minded man is unstable in all his ways” (James 1:8). There is no discipleship without decision.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, give us the courage to embrace Your truth without compromise and the grace to follow You with undivided hearts. Amen.
