The Sacred Heart of Jesus
Deuteronomy 7:6-11 | Psalm 103 | 1 John 4:7-16 | Matthew 11:25-30
In Scripture, the heart isn’t just an organ. It’s the center of a person (physical, emotional, moral). The Sacred Heart of Jesus is God’s love made visible. And what does this Heart do? It heals, not hates. Consoles, not condemns. It burns with a love we don’t earn and can’t lose.
In the first reading, Moses tells Israel: “You are a people holy to the Lord your God” [Deut 7:6]. Holy here does not mean flawless. It means chosen, set apart and loved first. Why? Not because Israel was strongest or best. “Because the Lord loved you” [Deut. 7:8]. Psalm 103 tells us “compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love.” That’s not a divine mood swing. That’s who He is. God is love.
In the gospel, Jesus says it plainly: “Come to me, all you who labour and are burdened” [Matt 11:28]. Come as you are. Exhausted, bitter, guilty, frustrated, disappointed and numb. Just come. And “My yoke is easy, my burden light” [11:30]. The yoke is easy not because life stops being hard; but because a yoke is for two. A yoke is a wooden beam designed to be carried by two animals or two human labourers. So, Jesus takes the heavier side. You don’t carry it alone anymore. Come, He will easy your stress.
The Sacred Heart is not a statue. It’s an invitation into mutual love. Let Him have what’s heavy today. Let Him love the parts of you, you have condemned. Then go do the same; heal, don’t hate; console, don’t condemn.
Prayer
Sacred Heart of Jesus, furnace of love and mercy, I bring You my tired heart. Heal what hurts, console what grieves, and teach me to love like You. Take the heavy side of my yoke today. I trust You. Amen.
